Stop Staring at the Clutter
Does your collected clutter make you feel like a deer staring at headlights? If you feel stressed or overwhelmed by this, it is time to stop staring, and move the clutter before it runs you over completely. Just looking at a cluttered room can make you wince. To make the clutter easier to tackle, use the container – clutter elimination method. Regardless of how big the job is, this helps you to stay more focused. This method is widely used by many professional organizers.
Four Container – Clutter Elimination Method Explained
You need four containers:
1. Keep
2. Sell
3. Donate
4. Trash
The keep container - This holds what you want still. Use this for frequently use items. Also, use to keep items of true sentimental value. For sentimental items, you must have a place to cherish it. All items must have a place to go to or to share.
If you have a collection that you want but do not have space, then pack some items for storage and rotate every three months, this way you can enjoy them. Or try encasing smaller collectables in a encased glassed door shadow box. If you cannot enjoy the items or it brings bad emotions, a suggestion, take a picture and put it in a treasure album.
The sell container – Use for items to sell that are in good condition still. Have a garage sale or sell the items on eBay. If you do not want to go through the trouble of selling items, you can donate them or start a swap party and share with friends and associates. When swap meet is over then you donate the items not swapped.
The donate container holds items that are in good shape and can help others. They should be in good shape.
The trash container is self-explanatory. If you have a real problem with clutter, the trash container is often the fullest container. You might divide your trash pile into two other piles: recycle and legitimate trash.
The Process
The best way to use the container – clutter elimination method is to tackle one room or space at a time. For example, you might tackle a linen closet, or a bedroom. Choose the size of your container depending on the size of the job. For example, for a linen closet four laundry baskets might do the job. If you are tackling a bedroom or family room, you may need four tarps and even outdoor space. Depending on the size and amount of clutter.
Empty the space completely. Examine each item in the space and make an immediate decision. Keep it, toss it, donate it or sell it. Do not linger on the decision. Trust your instincts. And do not keep everything. That defeats the purpose.
Once you have gone through every item in the space, you are going to have four full containers. Hopefully, the keep container is the smallest. Take out the trash. Call the donation truck to come pick up your items. Take photos of the sell stuff or post an ad for a garage sale. And put everything away that you are going to keep. Make sure each keep item has a good place to go. Consider labeling the spaces.
For example, if you are cleaning out your linen closet and you keep cleaning supplies in the closet, consider getting a basket and put your supplies inside it. Label it so everyone knows that is where the cleaning supplies go. Or use clear plastic containers and label for different categories, in example, hair-care, body-care, makeup, cleaning products, foot-care, facial, etc.
Cleaning out clutter is easy when you use the container system. You have no more deer in the headlights excuse, of staring and not clearing the clutter. Now, organized you are. You now, escape the clutter from hitting you in a head on collision. This method will help you to manage the clutter and keep the clutter headlights away from your path.
